Indian RTO Vehicle Registration Code Guide: State Prefixes, Number Formats & Transfers

Complete breakdown of Regional Transport Office (RTO) codes in India. Understand state prefixes, district numbers, BH-series plates, and NOC transfer rules.

1. Structure of Indian Vehicle License Plates

Every registered motor vehicle in India displays a registration number formatted under the Motor Vehicles Act:

Example: MH 01 AB 1234
• MH = State Prefix (Maharashtra)
• 01 = District RTO Code (Mumbai Central)
• AB = Series Sequence
• 1234 = Unique Vehicle Number

2. The Bharat (BH) Series Registration System

Introduced by MoRTH in 2021, the BH-series registration eliminates the need to transfer vehicle registration when defense personnel, government employees, or private sector employees working in 4+ states relocate across state borders.
