How to Find Your Bank's MICR Code and Branch Code Using Just Your Chequebook or Passbook

Practical guide: How to locate 9-digit MICR numbers, branch codes, and IFSC identifiers printed on physical cheque leaves, passbook front covers, and e-statements.

1. Finding MICR & Branch Codes on Passbook Covers

The front cover (or first inner printed page) of your bank passbook contains essential branch account metadata. Look for the following fields printed near your account number:

  • Branch Name & Code: Usually printed as a 4 to 6 digit code (e.g., Branch Code: 000003).
  • 9-Digit MICR Code: Labelled as MICR Code: 700002002.
  • 11-Character IFSC Code: Printed as IFSC: SBIN0000003.

2. Decoding Numbers Printed at the Bottom of a Cheque Leaf

Every standard RBI cheque leaf features a computer-readable band at the bottom printed in E-13B magnetic ink font:

"000012" ⑈ 700002002⑈ 000056⑈ 10
• "000012": 6-Digit Cheque Number
• 700002002: 9-Digit MICR Code (City + Bank + Branch)
• 000056: Account ID / RBI Clearance Number
• 10: Transaction Code (Savings Account = 10, Current Account = 11)
